Welcome to the AZGOP Daily Update!
The Only Official Newsletter of the Arizona Republican Party!

We have two very exciting announcements to make this morning. After an extensive search, I have offered the AZ GOP's executive director position to Matthew Kenney, and the position of communications director to Torunn Sinclair. I'm pleased to say they've both accepted the positions and start today.

Torunn comes to the AZ GOP from Governor Ducey's office where she spearheaded social media strategy, and was a critical part of the communications team. Her experience in politics began in 2014 when she was hired as the deputy communications director on Doug Ducey's campaign for governor. She left the governor's office for a short period in 2015 to be the press secretary for the YES on Proposition 123 campaign. Torunn grew up in Arizona and has lived here all her life. She graduated from Arizona State University in 2014 with both a bachelor of arts in journalism and master's degree in mass communication.

I first met Torunn when she was working on the Ducey campaign. Her communications skills paired with her creative thinking will bring our messaging to a new level. I'm very excited to have her on board.

For those of you who do not know Matthew Kenney, he is one of the most outstanding political operatives that Republicans have here in Arizona. He's managed massive field operations, built large coalitions, and advocated relentlessly for causes he's passionate about. Matthew served at the party once before, and has also served as State Director for Concerned Veterans for America, as well as worked on numerous campaigns and issue advocacy efforts. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the party, and I am incredibly excited to have him working to execute my vision for a strong and vibrant Republican Party.

Of course there's one group of people that won't like this hire -- Democrats.

Even if you know Matthew, you may not be aware of his service prior to joining the AZ GOP. Matthew is a US Army Ranger, who was honorably discharged in 2013 with the rank of Captain. He served in the Iraq War, receiving commendations including the Bronze Star and Commendation Medal for Valor, for his service. He has literally put his life on the line for our country, and for our freedom. Like most men who have worn our country's uniform, his patriotism and integrity are beyond reproach. I've gotten to know Matthew, and his beautiful family over the last few months...they represent what's best about Arizona. His wife and two young daughters are his true pride and joy, and we thank them for their willingness to share him with us.

Regards,

Chairman Lines

Governor Ducey on Wall: "Border Security is Good for Arizona"
In anticipation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' tour of the Arizona-Mexico border, Governor Doug Ducey voiced his support for the wall and greater border security. "I think border security is good for Arizona," he replied. "We made a decision through this campaign that there's going to be a wall, there's going to be a fence, there's going to be a physical barrier, there's going to be man-power down on the border." Governor Ducey added that he hopes to see Arizona companies bid for the contracts to construct the border wall. For the full story click here.
AZ Lawmakers Say Teacher Pay is Top Priority in New Budget
With budget negotiations in full swing, both the State Legislature and Governor Ducey agree that raising teacher pay is a top priority. The question now facing Arizona's lawmakers is 'how much?' Governor Ducey has proposed an annual 0.4 percent raise for teachers over a five-year period however the GOP leaders in the legislatures want more. After Prop 123 was passed last year, lawmakers want to further ensure that the new funding coming into Arizona education is going to the classrooms and the teachers to make the biggest impact. AG Brnovich Claims Success in Fight Against 'Drive By' Lawsuits
Az Attorney General Mark Brnovich has said his office is turning the tide against frivolous 'drive by lawsuits' that have been devastating small businesses. "Across the country, serial litigators are targeting businesses with disability access lawsuits and exploiting our vulnerable citizens for their own financial gain," Brnovich wrote in a recent post on his website. Brnovich said in February his office achieved a significant victory when a judge dismissed more than a thousand open lawsuits filed by a group called Advocates for Individuals with Disabilities (AID). AZ Legislature Passes Bill to Protect Arizonans from Property Seizure
This week, the Arizona Legislature passed HB2477 introduced by Rep. Eddie Farnsworth that would make it tougher for prosecutors to seize the property of Arizonans suspected of a crime. Rep. Farnsworth has said he thinks some people, don't need the oversight the bill calls for. "But obviously there are people that do, and we make laws for people who are not going to be good actors, we don't make them for the people who will be good actors," he said. Governor Ducey said last week this was an area of law in need of reform. For the full story click here.
Senator Flake Introduces Bill to Give Veterans Greater Access to Treatment Courts
Senator Jeff Flake yesterday announced the introduction of the Veterans Treatment Court Improvement Act, a bill to require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to hire additional Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) specialists in order to ensure veterans have greater access to effective and tailored treatment. The VJO program was created by the VA to provide veterans with timely access to VA services and engage justice-involved veterans in specialty treatment courts. "While veterans treatment courts have a proven record of reducing recidivism rates, they are underutilized due to a lack of VJO specialists nationwide." For the full story click here.
Rep. McSally Seeks Clear U.S. Objectives in Syria
Rep. Martha McSally spoke Monday about the Tomahawk Missile strike ordered by President Trump on Syrian airfields and installations. McSally clarified that, beyond striking a punishing blow against the Syrian regime that once again used chemical weapons against civilians, the attack was also a message to the rest of the world. "We are going to show some leadership again and the international community needs to work together to solve some of these complex issues," said McSally. Now, McSally looks to see clear U.S. objectives and greater Congressional involvement in future military action. For the full story click here.
Trump Warns China on North Korea: "Help Solve the Problem or We Will"
President Trump, at the end of his talks with President Xi Jinping last week, warned China that if China does not act, the U.S. will do what is necessary to get the regime of Kim Jong Un in North Korea under control. "China has great influence over North Korea. And China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won't," Trump said. "And if they do, that will be very good for China. And if they don't, it won't be good for anyone. If China is not going to solve North Korea, we will. That is all I am telling you." North Korea has already launched repeated missile tests into the Sea of Japan and surrounding waters, threatening the U.S. and its allies. For the full story click here
